I'm a Guide leader. And I love it. 1 1/2 hours every week that I get to be a little kid again. Play games, tell stories, practice leadership skills, improve communication skills and do craft. This week was craft. Nic and I were at a loss of what to do with them when Nic pulled the paddle pop sticks out of the cupboard and started a spontaneous craft project with the girls - paddle pop stick boxes. Next week they'll decorate them and then fill them with chocolates for Valentine's Day.
One of my more vivid memories from visiting my grandparents as a child was sitting at the picnic table on the back verandah at about 7:30am. It was the July school holidays so it was probably only 2 or 3 degrees (Celsius) outside. Because there were so many people staying there on this particular occasion, all the breakfast things were still on the tables inside so I couldn't bring my craft stuff inside yet. I was impatient to finish my box. The sides were getting really high. After a few minutes of wandering around aimlessly inside I decided to brave the cold and headed out to the back table where my stuff was waiting. I could hear someone in the shower. I lasted maybe 10 minutes out there before I got cold and got sick of fighting with the glue to come out of the bottle. I went back inside.
I don't know why that memory has stuck with me - it feels almost like a secret. I don't think anyone even knew I was out there. I was maybe 9 or 10 years old. My cousin and I finished our boxes later on and probably made a few more. I don't know why there were so many paddle pop sticks around. Probably specifically for our benefit. We used to do lots of craft type stuff while we were there.
This week after the girls had left, we were programming for the rest of the term and planning an upcoming camp. I grabbed the paddle pop sticks and glue and finished the girls boxes for them while we were talking. They'll be ready for the girls to make lids next week. It was actually kind of soothing stacking one stick on top of the other, dabbing the glue in the corners, then stacking more sticks. This is one of the little things I love about being a Guide leader. Experiencing those snippets of childhood all over again, and seeing them from a totally different perspective.
Day seven: make a paddle pop stick box
